I would like to know please what are the main prerequisities on the data (.gdb,.shp,..) before getting to importing to an empty model or a scene() using esri City Engine ?
And How to transform this 2D data into a 3D data (How to get the shape of a building for example)? What is the process to follow in order to create 3D shapefiles ?

Thank you.

I am having trouble overlaying my SHP file onto the terrain. All of the SHP files and DEM and Texture gtif are all on the same coordinates (NAD83 North Carolina (US feet)).

When I try to export a scene, the exporter sometimes infinitely hangs on "finalizing export."

This is a problem with a new building I've developed. It's meant to be very fully featured in terms of randomized
facade elements, attached models, texture variations etc.

The rule file has gotten very large. If I reduce it down in size by eliminating some of the facade elements and variations,
the export works. As I reintroduce things, eventually I'll reach a point in which the export starts hanging on "finalized
export" and it fails (I have to kill the CE process to get out of the program).

This suggests there is some kind of limit to how complex a rule can be if it is going to export successfully. Is this the
case? And if so, is there a way to test or know what that limit is?

Thanks.

I have been away from this tool for a couple of months but for some reason seem to have forgotten a workaround I had for importing a heightmap. I tried Brady's example in an earlier thread but an odd thing almost always happens. I tried creating the image in various tools and various formats. I've gone back to trying to use a geotiff. I've tried 8 bit, 16 bit and 32 bit. When the file is imported, it seems to put it in the correct place but the odd thing I encounter is that I never see the terrain. When I "fit" it in the scene, it goes to where I expect but there is no geometry. The grid position looks right but the perspective view contains 1 object, 0 polygons.
There was something I'd forgotten to do in my importing process but I can't for the life of me remember what it was that made all the difference.

Hi Matthias!!

I have a question, how can I export my data from ArcMaps straight to CityEngine? what extension should I use to not loose any layers and map colors? I tried shape file, and all I got was grey maps with no layers.
I also tried .gdb and for some reason it wouldn't let me import it, because of coordinates, so I removed them and the data was still the same grey- no layers

Best!

Hi all,

I have been experiencing this problem repeatedly. I am trying to import some models (both "homemade" and from the 3D warehouse), GIS vector data (building footprints, roads, etc), and GIS raster layers (elevation and imagery). I have tried .tif, .png, and .bmp and also have run the "Export Raster World File" tool on them. Everything is in the correct UTM zone in ArcMap, but it seems there is an issue reading in the coordinates in CityEngine.

Has anyone experienced this and have any tips?
I have a question, I imported DFX file into scene, than I used rules to color the site plan, suddenly today when I opened the file the site plan that was colored using rules "blinks" with grey triangles, I noticed when I created a new shape everything works well, but the site plan (dfx) that was imported seems to not work property.

Here's something I haven't yet been able to figure out. I'm importing simple building footprints from FGDB into an empty scene. Although I have no street network, I do know what direction each model should face (in other words, which side of the model should be the front). This I'm trying to model based on the shape's first edge. Trouble is that the placement of the origin (and therefore first edge) of each shape seems completely arbitrary.

I would have thought it had something to do with the order of vertices of the 2D shapes, but I can't work out any logic - see attached image, which is a composition of 4 shapes from ArcMap showing vertices. I manually painted in purple lines where CityEngine places the first edge.

This is a problem, since I don't want to set the first edge of each footprint manually (it's a lot of houses). Besides, "set first edge" doesn't always seem to persist if I regenerate a lot of models. Exports to FGDB and KML also show random behaviour with origin placement.

So my question is: how does CityEngine work out where to put the origin of a shape imported from FGDB? Can I solve this problem in another way than manually setting each first edge?

Thanks

Hi Matthias!

In my project everything looks to be into a scale, I brought sketchup models, terrain, but then, when I use rules "extrude" 12 the new building seems to be much taller than the rest of my sketchup models, 12 feet height building is taller than 4 story building.
I changed the coordinates from meters to feet's but still it won't change anything.
Sincerely
One more question, could you explain to me what does the analyze graph do? Its a little bit too complicated to me, in a few words (from yellow to red colors) for instance, red means well developed networks? or to much networks in small area?

Hi Matthias,

I am working on my projects (on PC)and everything seems to work well, unless I work on MAC, I am having troubles to export my project into web scene. Another problem is, when I work on a project (3D terrain+ buildings on MAC) everything runs smooth, but when I try to create new project and use the same map files (height maps) suddenly City Engine starts to be very slow.
Are there any adjustments? that I can just change on MAC? the project runs well on PC

Sincerely,

I have a question about Web Scene Bookmarks, after I export my project into Web Scene there is no "STAR" SYMBOL for my bookmarks which I would like to use... It seemed to work before, but now it doesn't, where would be a problem?
