Batch Selecting by Location and Exporting Shapefiles

Hello,

I have ArcGIS Desktop with an ArcInfo Licence.

I have a shapefile with over 1000 features in it. For each of these features I wish to 'select by location' all data points that fall within the feature from a points layer. I then wish to export the selected data from the points layer as an individual shapefile. So this would result in 1 shapefile of selected points per 1 feature.

I know how to do this for shapefiles that contain 1 feature, but not as a batch. Does anyone know if this can be done using a series of toolboxes? or if not by using python? If so, where would be the best place to start with python programming?

You could run an overlay on the points (e.g. Identity or Intersect) with the polygons to give each point the added attributes of the polygon, specifically the field and values you want to use to separate out the points, then use one of the "split layer by attribute" scripts available to export to individual shapefiles based on a value in a field. see http://resources.arcgis.com/gallery/...6-CA6D9920F808

this can be done in model builder with the iterate field values and using the value as a varible for the output shapefiles, iterate the shapefile on an attribute that has unique values then select the polygons in the shapefile with select by attributes for the value then select the points with select layer by location and create a feature layer with the vaue as part of the name (P_%Value%) then use the featureclass to shapefile converion tool to export them out
