Question Calculating Raster Area In ArcGIS 9.3.1 Question

Wondering if anybody out there knows the best way to calculate area within a raster, i.e., the different areas for different types of land-use in a county? I tried doing zonal statistics within Spatial Analyst. Am I going in the right direction by doing this, or is there a better way? Thanks for your response.

Land-use rasters (and other categorical raster datasets) have attribute tables, Mallory. In the table is a [count] field showing the number of occurrences of each category. Multiplying the counts by the square of the cellsize gives the total area covered by each category.

    Bill,

Thanks. This is very helpful--[count] x square root of cell-size = area. I am guessing you calculate this using the field calculator.

The Field Calculator will do it, Mallory. Please note that it's the square of the cellsize, not the square root.

    Mallory,

Rather than doing the calculations manually with the field calculator, you can run the Zonal Geometry Tool with the "Geometry Type" parameter set to "Area". This is the default.

If you have many counties and want a summary for each, then run the Tabulate Area Tool.
