    Question Limitation for license de-authorazation

From 'ArcGIS 10 Licensing Concepts and Strategies' white paper, it says that "Deauthorization is permitted up to four times per year per license."
Is this based on Authorization Number or just single license authorized in LM?
To clarify my qustion, let's say we have ten ArcInfo concurrent licenses and they indicate the same Authorization Number (EFLXXXXXXXXX). And we plan to install multiple LM to support different user groups (i.e. 5 LM machines) and install two licenses on each of them. If these five LM workstations got refreshed we will need to de-authorize the licenses on each machine and re-authorize on the new ones (therefore deauthorizing 5 times). Then can we deauthorize the licenses 4 times on each machine? Or it is up to 4 times per Authorization Number so we can de-authorize total 4 times? Then we will not able to de-authorize on five different machines?

Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks,

    Dahae,

Fair question, it will depend on how ESRI has implemented the license Activation Services integrating the FlexNet Publisher license activation on its servers and they don't publish that information. Each activation pair--unique FlexNet host ID & Registration number--is probably the metering unit tracked for authorization count. In which case you'll be fine.

But chances are you would not have an issue in your scenario--why would you be refreshing 5 license servers in a year? And remember your registration numbers/activation pairs get reissued each year now.

If it becomes an issue, just work with your ESRI customer service reps or vendor. They have flexibility in management of reissuing the authorization numbers and will work with the user community to resolve issues like you describe.

I believe that white paper needs to be updated.

Deauthorization limits should only apply to ArcGIS Desktop 10 Single Use authorization numbers. Each Single-Use authorization numbers are limited to 4 deauthorizations per year. The year starts on the date of the first deauthorization. If a user attempts to deauthorize a single use more than 4 times within that year, they'll get a message "Error: 7466: Deauthorization of the license is denied because max number of returns is exceeded."

    see related kb:

ArcGIS Desktop 10 Concurrent Use Authorization numbers should not have a limit on the times they can be deauthorized within a year. If you do experience an issue with it, you can log an incident with tech support or work with your Customer Service Rep to review the authorization number more closely.

    Someone HELP.

I am a college student trying to get ArcGIS 10 set up for my class. The first time I authorized with my single use 180 day code I did so on ArcEditor (non intentionally.) I need to authorize with ArcInfo to do my course work. The very first time I hit deauthorize to switch my license I got this error (7466) and googled and figured out what it meant. I can guarantee that I have not deauthorized more than 4 times because I hit the button one single time when I did finally realize what the problem was. To top it off, I cannot get in touch with customer support at all because I do not have a customer number since I am using the single use code that I bought came with my textbook rather than software bought directly from ESRI. What do I do? Granted I have not paid for the program in full but I am taking this course as a supplement to my major and I am sure I will be using ArcGIS in the future. It would be so nice to actually get to use what I paid for and learn a little about GIS.

Anybody that could offer any help or a way to get me in touch with someone who could help I would so greatly appreciate it.

    Cody,

The 180-day ESRI Press license you purchased with the text is ONLY an ArcEditor level license. That is your entitlement. There are some ESRI Press books with 90-day ArcInfo level authorization numbers, but not your situation and you can only activate at the ArcEditor level with your code--de-authorization would not have changed that.

Check to see if your school is a Higher Education Campus (or Lab) level licensee of ESRIs programs. If so, you should be able to obtain a 365-day ArcInfo level authorization number. You'd then register the number, and use it to either atttempt to reactivate your current installation, or you may need to reinstall. And if your school has a campus license, you are eligible for technical support with installation issues from ESRI support.

This ArcGIS Trial help page has all the details, but closely read the information in "6. Steps to Authorize" on the installation tab.

Post back if you get stuck.
