Question (Again) Permanent relocation the fields in the attribute table,

(Again) Permanent relocation the fields in the attribute table

I’m not sure if there is a tool that can presentably keep the new position of the fields as we change them from one place to another

For example, in the attached screenshot, if I need to permanently move the filed named “Community_Eglish” to the indicated position, then which tool I can use?

Sure, If I move that field to the indicated position (drag and drop), this this would be temporary such that if we re-added the layer then the field will get back to its original position!

I got a help through the forum on how I can “Sort” the records of the attribute table permanently according to certain fields. The tool is “Sort”! NOW, how could the field be moved to a new position permanently?

    Thank you in advance,

    Regards

    Jamal

    Jamal:

You know that this is the most requested item on the ideas website and that ESRI is considering it, but has otherwise left us to flounder for years. I normally export the feature class shell to a Personal Geodatabase and then use Access to reorder the fields in a template table and then export the new template back where I want it and reload the features into it (or some other variant of this process with Access doing all of the field reorganization).

The Summary Statistics tool can reorder the fields using the optional Case Field list section. You can add every field from the source feature class/table in the order that you want, as long as you do not repeat any field. (Note: you must include a summary value from at least one field, which will be appended at the end, and if all you have are text/date fields you should use the "First" summary option). The tool output will sort the records in ascending order according to the order that the case fields were added and permanently preserve that new field order.

The tool will not output features, just table records, and if any records are duplicates they will be summarized down to one record. But generally, if your final output is just a table this tool should normally do all you need. For feature classes you would have to create a new Feature Class and import the reordered field schema from the reordered Summary Statistics output table. Then you could reload your original features into that new feature class (optionally reload the features from a Sort tool operation if you need the features to be inserted in sorted order that matches the new field order). In ModelBuilder the reloading might be done with the Append tool using the no test option.

The Summary Statistics tool can normally do what you need if you are dealing with just a table. It is a bit more of a pain if you are trying to deal with features, but so far this is the only tool that I have found that seems to reorder fields permanently within ArcMap itself.

ETGeowizards can reorder fields and I think that is one of the free functions. But it creates a new dataset to do this.

QGIS has a Table Manager plug in that can reorder, redefine, rename, insert, etc. but it works on shapefiles, and probably (but I haven't tested it) spatial lite and some other datasets, not file geodatabases. It changes the dataset but saves a backup dbf in the original configuration.

I just needed to Reorder the Fields in a Table and was about to try and write a Python tool to do just that.

There's been a script around for a while that works for Feature Classes but needs an overhaul to also support standalone Tables.

Richards suggestion of using the Summary Statistics tool did exactly what I needed and saved me some valuable time.

I often use Summary Statistics where in Workstation I would have used FREQUENCY but had not thought to also apply it in place of PULLITEMS.

I think the solution indicated by Dan is the most practical one but unfortunately didn't work. May you please have a look on the error message below:

    what might be the problem?

I think that the ideal solution for this annoying problem is to allow to move the fields up and down. this way, we don't need to save our "feature class" in a new output.

This idea is already in the Ideas WebSite! please, vote if your time permits.

    all the best

This error didn't appear again. i used the tool but sounds not to do exactly what i need. but if it is enhanced, then it would be perfect. the fields should be allowed to move up and down. otherwise, it is perfect

Reordering fields with some workarounds (solution would be better) just came up again at http://gis.stackexchange.com/questio...se/32129#32129
