Can we use ArcHydro with ArcGIS 10?

I ve recently got a student full licence of Arc GIS 10. I'm new to ArcGIS and have done some very good ESRI's introductory virtual courses. But to the hydrological analysis I need to perform (roads drainage in forested areas) a colleague referred me to ArcHydro. Nevertheless, at "http://support.esri.com/en/downloads/datamodel/detail/15", under "Downloads - Tools", the most recent version of ArcHydro I find is "Arc Hydro Tools version 1.4 Final for ArcGIS 9.3/9.3.1 (...) (submitted 06/11/2011)". Can anybody tell me if I can download it and use it with my ArcGIS 10? Thanks

No the version 1.4 releases will not run on ArcGIS Desktop 10.0. You need a version 2.x release.

You'll probably want to use an FTP client like FileZilla to connect, but this ArcHydro Froum thread should put you on track. If you read the thread you'll see support for ArcGIS 10.0 has moved well beyond "Alpha" version.

The ESRI run FTP site holds the ongoing development builds including version 2.x that will run under ArcGIS 10.0. The latest version is ArcHydro v2.1.0.40, just posted up March 5th. Ok to consider these production ready releases--but ArcHydro users are expected to support themselves notably on the ArcHydro and Hydro forums.

I'd recommend using the latest ArcHydro build, unless you will be using the HEC GeoHMS release 6.0 (also available from the ESRI ftp site--not the version from the USACE HEC site) which has ArcHydro version dependencies and so bundles an ArcHydro version 2.1 installation several builds behind.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but, I believe if you install the latest HEC-GeoHMS version from the HEC website, it will automatically install the ArcHyrdo 2.0 and the APFramework, etc. that you need. I think that was my experience when I upgraded GeoHMS.

Correct, the GeoHMS 6.0 for ArcGIS 10.0 (package v 10.0.0.70) currently posted on the HEC site remains on the ArcHydro Tools v2.0 branch, at build 2.0.1.125

But HEC is a little slow to post up development (i.e. "bug fixed") releases for HEC GeoHMS and GeoRAS, while the versions on the ESRI maintained ftp site are the current builds with patches and bug fixes applied. At present, the ftp site is delivering GeoHMS builds v10.0.0.75, 10.0.0.76, 10.0.0.77, and the latest GeoHMS build v10.0.0.85 that bundles ArcHydro Tools v 2.1.0.30--as compared to the current v2.1.0.40 stand alone build of ArcHydro Tools. Development of the ArcHydro Tools 2.0 branch were finalized at build 2.0.1.133

Depending on your HEC-GeoHMS and ArcHydro support arrangements--you probably would prefer to be on the bug patched releases. The ReadmeMMDDYYY.doc file on the ftp site provides short notes on what is fixed with each build.

So generally, the best practice would be to download the current builds from the ESRI Water Resources Group managed ftp site.

Note: The GeoHMS installer sets version dependencies for ArcHydro, and so includes its install package (ArcHydroTools.msi), with the GeoHMS installer package. It will update an earlier version of ArcHydroTools, but will abort the installation if a later version of ArcHydroTools is already installed. So, if someone is going to work with GeoHMS they should probably use the latest version from the ESRI ftp site, not the HEC posted build--and eschewing use of the stand alone ArcHydro Tools installer.

Stuart - Thanks for the explanation.

If I install Arc Hydro 2.1.0.40, will the Model Builder models I've made using Arc Hydro tolls from the older version still work, or do I need to rebuild them so they call the correct tolls from the new version?

Your models will probably work unchanged, I believe all the component names 2.0 --> 2.1 are the same. So an upgrade install should drop in--although probably cleaner to uninstall, run the ftp site provided ApRegWork cleanup utility and install ArcHydro fresh.

Always hard to get usable details about the structural changes without a lot of reverse engineering and debugging. I prefer to just plug in and go, and fix what breaks. The ArcHydro team at ESRI Water Resources group is pretty responsive to technical questions and bug resolution, they just can't provide a lot of direct user support.

p.s. Just tried to upgrade in place from ArcHydro 2.1.0.22 to 2.1.0.40 and the installer balked at the upgrade wanting me to use add/remove programs to uninstall. Could swear I've done in place before, so maybe a new twist in the installation packages.
