    Default spatial join distance field

I am using a polar projection for my data frame and wgs84 for my layers. I have performed a spatial join on two layers. When I do this a new field called "distance" is created and populated. I would like to know what units this distance field is in (map layer?) and how this measurement is calculated. I have used this plus two other methods, all coming up with different measurements. Also, if anyone knows how to determine what point is the closest point that esri is using to determine the spatial join I would greatly appreciate that information also.
    Thanks!

you are using two different coordinate system files.

could you attach the (extracted small portion) two files and give us the exact polar coordinate system.
