Default Automatic Refresh of Active View in Layout View

I have a problem unique to a few of my MXD files when in Layout View. Normally when I make a change to something in the Active Data View, the change is visible automatically. For example if I move a piece of text, I can see where it moved to without hitting the refresh button, or if I change the color of something in the table of contents, the change is visible without have to hit the refresh button. But in a few MXD files, the changes are only visible if I hit the refresh button. This is most annoying when adding callouts. Is there a way to fix these files?

    Thanks in advance

The standard response is use MXD Doctor (in Win7: C:\Program Files (x86)\ArcGIS\Desktop10.0\Tools)

If that doesn't work, get well aquanted with F5?

Thanks for the suggestion. I have already tried that but, it did not find any problems, and yes me and the F5 key are very well acquainted.

Can you make a new blank MXD and use the "Change Layout" tool on the Layout View Toolbar to import the layout settings from your messed up mxd and then copy the data frame over? That too has worked for me in the past to get rid of a strange MXD.
