Converting MIF to Shapefile

I have several .MIF files that I am attempting to convert to shapefiles. I have used the conversion tools in ArcCatalog to perform this taks before. However, when attempting to convert these files I continually get and error message that reads "Unable to Finish Conversion". What could be causing the conversion to not work??????
